HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT:
Considerable infrastructure
for manpower development has been created in the country since
the inception of NIMH. As there is still huge demand for the
trained manpower, there is a need for master level trainers to
undertake the training programmes across the country. Hence,
the thrust area is now to develop and design master level programmes
both at pre-service and inservice levels. Accordingly a perceptible
shift is taking place in adding more and more master level programmes
of long as well as short term, besides developing course to fill
the gaps in rehabilitation services in the life-cycle approach.
Aimed at providing state of the art professional intervention
to the persons with mental retardation, the Institute developed
and designed the following courses, which are recognised by the
Rehabilitation Council of India.
DIPLOMA
IN SPECIAL EDUCATION (Mental Retardation):
A one
year diploma level course, which prepares special teachers, is
being offered at 56 training centres throughout the country with
an in take capacity of 20 seats at each centre. The minimum qualifications
prescribed for the entry is 10+2 or equivalent.
DIPLOMA
IN VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT (Mental Retardation):
A one
year academic course, presently being offered at 3 Centres prepares
vocational instructors. Each centre has 20 seats to be filled-in
from across the country. The minimum qualifications prescribed
for the entry is 10+2 or equivalent.

DIPLOMA
COURSE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION:
A one
year Diploma Course in Early Childhood Special Education (Mental
Retardation) with an intake of 20 candidates as approved by RCI
is introduced at 2 Centres during the year 2002-2003.
BACHELOR'S
DEGREE IN REHABILITATION SERVICES (Therapeutics):
This
is a 4 year degree course. Intake from all over the country is
17 for each academic year - To be conducted at Regional Centre,
New Delhi from the academic year 2002-03 subject to RCI recognition
and affiliation of University concerned. The entry qualification
is 10+2 or its equivalent.
B.ED. SPECIAL EDUCATION (Mental Retardation):
A One
year programme affiliated to Osmania University is being offered
to prepare Spec ial teachers/Co-ordinators/Incharges/Principals
of Specials schools for children with mental retardation and
resource room teachers in regular schools for children with learning
problems. The entry qualification for this course is any graduation.
The capacity of this programme is 15 seats. Presently it is being
offered at 4 centresin the Country.
B.ED.
SPECIAL EDUCATION (Mental Retardation) Distance Mode:
The
Institute is offering B.Ed. Special Education (Mental Retardation)
through distance mode at its Regional Centre, New Delhi. The
course is recognised by Rehabilitation Council of India and affiliated
to M.P. Bhoj (open) University, Bhopal.
P.G.
DIPLOMA IN EARLY INTERVENTION:
This
is one year course, affiliated to Osmania University with an
intake of 12 seats. The minimum qualification is MBBS, BMR, BRS
(MR), B.Ed. (Spl., Ed.), Masters in Child Development, Bachelors
in PT, OT, ST or Masters in Child Psychology. This programme
aims at preparing Early interventionist to deliver services in
early intervention units.
M.Phil IN
REHABILITATION PSYCHOLOGY:
This
is a two year course, affiliated to Osmania University with an
intake capacity of 12 seats. The entry qualification is M.A/M.Sc
degree in psychology from a University recognised by UGC. The
course is designed to create a cadre of highly competent professionals
to work as master trainers/ specialists in the field of disability.
M.Ed SPECIAL
EDUCATION (Mental Retardation):
This is a one year masters programme, affiliated to Osmania University
and approved by RCI. The entry qualification for this course
is B.Ed Special Education (Mental Retardation) or B.Ed with diploma
in Special Education ( Mental Retardation). Total No. of Seats
is 10. The programme aims at preparing Master Teachers for teacher
education for mental retardation.
MDRA PROGRAM:
Disability Rehabilitation as a profession has gained increased
recognition and importance in recent years resulting in an acute
need for competent and professionally trained rehabilitation
managers. Considering the demand, this two-year MDRA programme
of semester mode is designed. This Course has been developed
by NIMH, recognised by Rehabilitation Council of India and affiliated
to Jawaharlal Nehru technological University.
The role of
Disability administrator is to converge many roles like those
of finance, accounts, project Management, environment, and community
management, Organization development, HR, information technology,
rehabilitation policies, law etc. This programme is practicum
oriented and research driven viz., strong component of practicals,
fieldwork, project research work and participatory learning in
the form of seminar presentations and conferences. The students
can hold the responsibility of managing and administering various
organizations, institutions as well as major projects and programmes
in Government and voluntary sectors. MDRA program is the first
of its kind in the areas of disability rehabilitation administration.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
(Short term programmes)
The
Institute developed and designed, on a continuous basis, professional
development programmes, popularly known as short term training
programmes. These training programmes are targeted towards rehabilitation
professionals and personnel working in the field of mental retardation.
Around 70 training programmes are conducted in a year running
from 3 days to 2 weeks.

NATIONAL PROGRAMMES:
NIMH
provides opportunity and venue for various interested groups
to come together and discuss on topical issues for further development
of programmes aiming at empowerment of persons with mental retardation.
Presently national/state level programmes for professionals,
parents and special employees are conducted.
National level
programmes are also organised in the area of sports and dance
and music and other cultural activities
CERTIFICATE COURSES:
Feedback
from the field indicated that there is need for intensive training
on therapeutics to the special teachers who are to handle the
day to day training programmes of the children with mental retardation.
Accordingly, from the current year, certificate course of 2 to
3 months duration have been planned on self-financing basis.
It is proposed to run certificate courses in speech therapy,
physiotherapy, behaviour modification, vocational training and
rehabilitation administration.
NIMH STUDY FELLOWSHIP:
NIMH
has designed Rehabilitation Professional Development Programme
as a study fellowship to be undertaken at NIMH for a period of
one year for professionals in the field of mental retardation,
to identify the field needs region specific and developing models
and techniques to meet these needs appropriate to the socio-cultural
backgrounds of the various regions. Ten(10) research fellows
from different functional areas and from different regions will
be awarded fellowship.
